| Why are cats afraid of cucumbers? |
You may have seen videos online of people scaring their cats by quietly placing a cucumber behind them. Then, when the cat turns around to see the cucumber, it gets scared and jumps back, much to the delight of the person filming. The first time you see a video of a cat being startled by a cucumber, you may think it's just a coincidence. After watching several videos, you may wonder why cats are afraid of cucumbers?
Why are cats afraid of cucumbers?
The cat food industry likes to point out that cats are predators. But many people forget that cats are also prey. In fact, cats can be prey for many other animals. So by nature, cats don't like things sneaking upon them. For this reason, cats have a sensitive sense of hearing, smell, and sight. In fact, cats have a much more sensitive sense of smell and hearing than dogs. When your cat turns to see something behind him that wasn't there before, he will initially be startled. This reaction may worsen if the cucumber is placed while your cat is eating and drinking or while using the litter box. Both of these activities make your cat vulnerable. This is because a cat that is eating, drinking, or even using the litter box is not as aware of its surroundings as it normally would be. A cat using the litter box also may not run away as quickly or as easily. Being startled by a potential predator during any of these activities is especially stressful for your cat.
Are cats afraid of cucumbers because they resemble snakes?
A common belief is that cats are afraid of cucumbers because they look like snakes. At first glance, it makes sense: cucumbers are long, narrow, and even have a little curve like a snake. Some people like to think that these features make
Cucumbers snake-like. So when your cat turns around and sees not only something that has seemingly appeared out of nowhere but also something that looks remarkably like a snake and then jerks in fright, these people argue that your cat thought it was a snake.
Of course, after the initial jump scare, most cats will realize that the intruding predator is really just a product. In fact, if you put the cucumber in front of your cat instead of behind it, it won't jump back in fear because it will know it's not a predator at all. The other problem with the snake hypothesis is that most cats are actually curious about snakes. If they find one in the yard (or in your house), they may scratch at them, thinking they are not too dissimilar to their favorite toy. Unless they have actually been bitten by a snake, your cat may not realize that a snake is something that can hurt them. So while cucumbers that resemble snakes are the cause of terror may seem like a fitting idea on the surface, your cat is probably more afraid of something sneaking up on her than something that looks like a snake sneaking up on her.
Should you scare your cat with cucumbers?
After watching the tenth video online of a cat being scared by a cucumber, you might get giddy with laughter and want to try it on your own cat. But like humans, cats don't like jump scares. This adrenaline rush can cause stress and panic. If a cat is repeatedly affected by it, it may become anxious even around you or during mealtimes. They may stop eating their food or stop using their litter box. Your cat may also hurt herself and/or break something in her initial panic when she turns around and sees the cucumber hiding behind her. Plus, it's just mean to scare your beloved cat with a cucumber.
While these videos of cats being scared by cucumbers may seem like something fun to try with your own cat at first, instead get her a catnip toy in the shape of a cucumber and share it together at a play session.
