Which age means which phase of life?
In most cases, smaller mammals have shorter life expectancy than large ones. However, cats are an exception. For example, cats generally live longer than dogs, although many cats are smaller than dogs. The average life expectancy of a domestic cat is 13 / 14 years. Even if life expectancy varies, well-groomed and cared for cats can grow up to 15 years or even older, a few even make it to 25 – 30 years.
How do I find out how old my cat is?
Cats obviously age faster than humans, but when cats are completely fully grown and developed, from about 3 years, their external appearance changes only very slightly. Usually, they seem consistently young to us, which often makes it difficult to assess real age.
But of course, cats also age! In order to be able to correctly determine the state of health and the phase of life of a cat, it makes sense to compare the age with the stages of human life. Probably the best-known method is to take the age of the cat times seven in order to reach a comparable human age. Unfortunately, it is not quite that simple, because with this method many peculiarities and aspects of "cat aging" are not taken into account. Accordingly, there are much more suitable approaches. We follow the following approach: At the end of the first cat year of life, your cat is about 15 human years old. At the end of the 2nd cat year, your cat would be about a 24-year-old human. According to this, each additional cat year corresponds to about 4 human years of life. So at 4 years old, the cat would be comparable to a 32-year-old human.
You can use the following overview to read the approximate human age of your cat and, more importantly, to identify the corresponding phase of life. Please note, however, that each cat must be considered individually. The classification in life phases is an estimate. Real age depends heavily on your cat's individual aging process.
In the overview you will see that we have divided the age of the cats into 4 phases of life. These phases are based on a basic understanding of the aging process of cats and the physical and mental developments. In particular, the physical and mental condition gives us clues in which phase the cat is currently in. Look for the current phase of your cat's life and find out how to keep your cat healthy and lively for a long time.
