Loud unexpected fireworks sounds can scare even the most relaxed dog or cat. Why? Dogs hear sounds 4 times louder, while cats hear sounds almost 10 times louder than humans.
Some pets find shelter at home during the New Year celebration, while many become desperate and flee their homes and the sounds.
Some dogs love fireworks and try to grab the lit fireworks with their mouths. These can cause severe burns, which require emergency veterinary intervention. Therefore, the owners of pets should be extra vigilant with their pets around the fireworks.
How to protect your pets near fireworks:
- Keep your pets indoors in a safe location while using fireworks;
- turn on a radio or TV to distract the pets;
- stay close to them and keep them busy;
- give extra attention that they deserve.
The pet's fear can lead them to find a way out of the garden while trying to find shelter from the loud noises.
There are some ways to find the pets in case they run away:
- Make sure your pet has a tag on the collar with the owner's information. It is advisable to have the pet microchipped at the veterinarian if it has not yet been microchipped.
- A microchip gives your pet an identification number that can be useful in tracking down in case they run away. A found pet can be taken to the vet, and they can scan the microchip and locate the owner.
- Ask your veterinarian if sedatives are optional for your pets. Tranquilizers should only be administered when needed and in the appropriate doses.
- If the pet is not microchipped, take a recent photo of the pet that can be used in the event that the pet runs away. Make sure the information of the microchipped pet is accurate and up-to-date, including the current address and phone number.
