Cat attacks dog – What you should do immediately!
Domestic cats are in principle regarded as pleasant and peaceful contemporaries. However, it is not uncommon for dogs and cats to understand each other excellently from the outset. It becomes difficult in turf wars, after all, the problem only worsens if you intervene too early. If a cat attacks a small dog and you do not attack at all, serious injuries can result. In this article, I will go into more detail for you how you should react in such a situation and also how the merging of dog and cat can work
A cat attacks your dog?
The favorite round to go for a walk is not only indispensable for dog lovers. Dogs also need to get out into the fresh air regularly. But then it happens, a strange cat attacks your dog and the walk has gone directly. It is recommended, if such a thing has already happened, to try to avoid the direct territory of the cat, because already arisen conflicts between dog and cat have usually not disappeared out of nowhere.
Your first reaction might be to shout out loud and stomp on the ground to scare the cat away. This is well worth a try and in some cases possibly already sufficient.
However, if a cat really goes into attack mode because it feels threatened or wants to defend its territory, it can also happen that it bites on your dog.
After all, you don't want the cat to be hurt and yet you have to protect your dog.
A tip for you, for example, is to carry something like a stick with you. Of course, you should not hit the cat, but rather protect yourself so that you will not be hurt if you intervene. In addition, you can carefully keep the cat at a distance with the stick from the outset, so that it does not even come to the attack.
If it came to the injury of dog or human, read the paragraph on liability. I will explain to you later exactly who is liable in the event of damage.
Dispute between the four-legged friends in their own household
Dog and cat are not known to understand each other perfectly from the outset. With the right approach, however, you can also achieve that your darlings become a heart and a soul.
Depending on the age and which animal was there first, you have to pay attention to different points. However, according to my experience, the best option is to keep dog and cat together as young animals from the beginning.
It is not uncommon for this to be easy and perhaps not so predictable from the outset. That's why I've summarized the most useful tips for you that you can keep your dog and cat together without the cat attacking the dog or vice versa.
You can find out more about these tips in the section on what to do if your cat attacks a puppy. Of course, these tips also apply to adult animals.
The most difficult thing is to get an adult cat used to a puppy, as the cat can quickly consider the puppy as an intruder into its territory. What to do if a cat attacks a puppy will be read in a later section.
Dogs are pack animals, so even if your dog is already fully grown, he will accept a cat as a young animal in most cases without much trouble. The only important thing is to give both animals the necessary privacy so that they can "sniff" and retreat in a safe environment.
To prevent the cat from attacking the dog or the dog from attacking the cat, I recommend that you always approach the reunion under observation. Staying calm is very important, because your nervousness could also spread to the animals. Enjoy working with treats to get the cat and dog used to each other.
Cat attacks dog – Who is liable in the event of damage?
When an animal gets hurt, it's always difficult for you as an animal lover. Fortunately, in most cases, injuries heal quickly without further complications and nothing serious has happened. However, sometimes an open wound or injury becomes inflamed and then a visit to the veterinarian is necessary and advisable. It is important that you react quickly, especially if you notice that the situation is getting out of control. In such cases, you may also ask yourself what the liability is like when a claim occurs. If your cat attacks a strange dog, you must be liable for the damage that occurs. Here it is worthwhile to take out liability insurance for the animal.
For the insurance companies or for the basic liability, it always depends on who caused the attack and whether the damage could have been prevented by the owner.
If a strange cat attacks your dog, he then defends himself and injures the cat, both pet owners should contact their insurance companies and submit the claim. You are always liable if your pet causes harm to others.
If you "co-caused" the damage from the point of view of the insurance company because you did not prevent it due to inattention, although it would have been possible for you, it may even happen that your insurance company refuses to cover the costs.
In such cases, it is best to always sit down with the other pet owner and discuss, if possible, how you can best agree.
Cat attacks puppies – How to deal with such a situation
Especially if you want to get an adult cat used to a puppy and your cat has already had negative experiences with dogs, it can happen with the habituation that the cat attacks the puppy. In such a case, you have to take special care without fear that you could transfer to the animals.
Puppies are often particularly clumsy and do not yet know how to deal with such situations. Ideally, the adult cat does not see the puppy as an intruder, so it is particularly important that the cat continues to have its freedom from the outset and that both animals have opportunities to retreat.
If the cat attacks the puppy, you should of course intervene and postpone the reunion to another time. This takes the tension out of the situation and the animals can slowly get used to each other step by step.
It's also best if the puppy and cat have different places to drink and eat, so they both don't feel like they have to be jealous or something is taken away from them.
So that the cat does not attack the puppy, both should also have their own toys if they do not want to share them voluntarily with each other. I recommend that you approach the habituation with a lot of patience and confidence, because this will prevent tension from arising and a turf war can occur.
With a lot of patience and mutually accepted freedom, cat and puppy will soon be a heart and a soul.
