cat adoption What  you  needs to know ? 2022 GUIDE

There is so much to think about when you adopt a new cat: What to name it, how to feed it, where   best to put a scratching post for maximum bird watching, and more. One thing you may not think about (but probably should) is who to notify.

Adopting a new pet means disrupting your normal routine. Animals need time to adjust to their new home, and often this requires some of your attention. Bringing a cat home is also a transition for both of you. While everyone is getting used to each other, it's important that the right people in your life know what's going on to help you adjust.

To help you navigate the process, we've put together this handy list of people to notify before and immediately after adopting a new cat.

Your landlord

If you're renting, you'll first need to check with your landlord or management company to see if you're allowed to take a cat home, especially if it's not clear in your lease if pets are allowed. In this regard, it's always better to be safe than sorry, so get approved first rather than asking for permission later.

Look at your lease before talking to your landlord. If there's a policy on neglectful pets, it's probably good to go, though you should still give them a heads up. If the lease is less clear, ask - just to be sure.

A veterinarian

Choose a vet for your cat before you bring her home. That way, you can have them set up with a caregiver right away.

If you already have a vet for existing pets, you can wait until the adoption is finalized and your cat's medical records are available. Otherwise, start your research. Once you know your adoption date, call to schedule a check-up for about a week after your cat comes home (and sooner if there are known medical problems). Even if your cat is perfectly healthy, it's important to establish a relationship with a veterinarian as early as possible.

Your employee

Unlike adopting a puppy, bringing home a cat probably won't change your work routine much. Still, it's always worth seeing if it's possible to take a few days off to ease the adjustment period of your new cat, especially if you've adopted a kitten. These early days are important for bonding. The more time you can spend getting used to each other's presence, the better.

Loving with cat allergies

Cat allergies are twice as common as dog allergies. Therefore, there's a good chance that at least a couple of your friends or family members will have a hard time coping with your new furry addition. Reach out to them to let them know you're planning on or have just adopted a cat, especially if it's someone who comes over frequently. This doesn't mean they can never come over again, just that they want to manage their allergies by taking a preventative measure. Trust us, they will be glad you said something.

Friends and family who love cats

Second, the people who are most excited about you adopting a cat are your friends and family members who have an affinity for cats themselves. Those who love cats are also aware of the plight of our feline friends (there are more cats than dogs in shelters, and they are more likely to be euthanized), so they are often happy to hear that another cat has found happiness always afterward. They will also be your best sources for questions and advice, as will your pet sitter.

A Pet Sitting Service

Many dog walking services also offer cat check-ins - ideal if you work long hours or travel a lot. Contact a service now so you have someone available when you need to check in quickly or travel unexpectedly. You'll need to stop by for a meet & greet before they can provide full service. Therefore, it's ideal to get this done early.

Your Instagram followers

Cats are natural social media stars. Head over to Instagram (or another favorite social media site) and show off your new friend - there will definitely be a lot of people who are excited. Go ahead and tag the save you said goodbye to if they have a handle. You'll help spread the word about the great work they do, and maybe even help another cat get rescued!
